Five decades ago, three churches noticed something troubling: Older adults were being evicted due to the redevelopment of downtown Denver. In 1976, the churches came together and created what would become Senior Support Services.
What started as a compassionate response to a local crisis grew into something much larger. By 1979, SSS had expanded to offer daily hot meals, a safe place to spend the day, and hands-on case management to help seniors secure benefits, find housing, and rebuild stability.
In 1995, the commitment became permanent when SSS purchased its own building at 18th Avenue and Emerson Street. Today it serves as a home base where hungry and homeless seniors can access everything they need under one roof. No shuttling between agencies, no bureaucratic runaround, just real help from people who care.
Fifty years after those six churches said enough is enough, SSS remains the only day center in Denver dedicated exclusively to adults 60 and older who are homeless or in need. The faces have changed, but the mission never has.
Our Mission
Our mission is to make each day better and safer for Denver’s hungry and homeless seniors by providing the resources and support they need to lead more self-sufficient and fulfilling lives.
The narrator of this video, Kevin McGrellis, did a one-year internship (2013) at Senior Support Services while serving as a Colorado Vincentian Volunteer. Unfortunately, Kevin had a heart attack and passed away in 2022.
